South Africa’s Independent Power Producers (IPP) Office has said 33 bids have been received as part of the third window of the country’s battery energy storage auctions. The bids have come from 28 companies, with two bidding for multiple sites. The bidders include France’s TotalEnergies, which has made several submissions.
Total investments from the eight preferred solar bidders were R31.4 billion (~$1.69 billion). The South African equity participation will be 49% across all the preferred bidders. BESIPPPP Eight battery energy storage projects were awarded preferred bidder status under the BESIPPPP Bid Window 2.
With bids due by July 31, 2024, the projects will be situated at five pre-selected substation sites identified by South African energy company Eskom. The sites include the Harvard, Leander, Theseus, Everest and Merapi substations in the country’s Free State province.
In May 2025, South African independent power producer (IPP) Mulilo emerged as the preferred bidder across four of the sites: the 123 MW Retreat BESS project at the Merapi substation, with an evaluation price of R2 477.86/MWh.
